Report and results of the 4th round of Welsh Triathlon's TriStars Series 2014 at the Ruthin Junior Triathlon
Round 4 – Ruthin Junior Triathlon (Sunday 10th May)
Like the first 3 rounds of the series round 4 did not disappoint! With athletes travelling from all over Wales they were joined by some of their English counterparts from the North West, the Midlands, South West, and as far afield as Cambridgeshire and London. Competition was stiff in all age group categories with a number of the current top 10 in each age group who were attending being placed together in the last 3 waves of each category.
The weather forecast was for heavy rain in the morning followed by light blustery showers, however the heavy rain forecast didn’t appear and the day was filled with sunshine and showers, although those blustery winds remained which made for tough going at times, especially for the Welsh Triathlon team of Darren and Tom who were seen chasing the Welsh Triathlon gazebo across the field (if only we had a picture).
Despite the weather trying its usual tricks, almost 200 athletes arrived at the start line ready to compete in their respective age groups. The day started with an introduction to triathlon with the SuperMinis, followed by the SuperSprint and then the Sprint event. These categories give children the encouragement to take part in a less competitive environment and it was great seeing the SuperMinis giving it their all in windy conditions on a tough course.
It was a great race to start the day with Faye Williams of Ruthin TriStars leading home the girls, followed by Millie Hannant of Ruthin TriStars in second place and Jaida Nichols in third. The boys were led home by Louis Roberts of Cerist Juniors, followed in second by Jacob Welsh and in third place Gruffudd Hughes-Owen of Ruthin TriStars.
The next two categories to race were the SuperSprint and Sprint categories with great competition throughout. Thomas Davies and Isabella Whittlestone won the boys and girls SuperSprint, followed by Lloyd Nichols of OOTri for the boys and Nia Tansley of OOTri for the girls, with third places going to Oliver Whittlestone for the boys making it a family double of medals and Rachel Bosworth for the girls.
The sprint event was keenly contested by all competing with Thomas Huw Edwards leading home the boys and Amy Rickard of Ruthin TriStars leading home the girls, followed in second place by Callum Chamberlain of Ludlow Junior Tri in the boys race and Anna Scott for the girls of Ruthin TriStars, with Rhys Barkley of TriClaires coming in a close third in the boys category.
Next came the Youths which was keenly fought out by all with Regional Academy athlete Samuel Morgan Johnson leading home the field, with Tom Shelton of OOTri squeezing out one of the other Regional Academy athletes Jake Tapping into third place.
TriStart Start was, as always, keenly contested and made for some great racing with Dylan Pye for the boys and Amy Kenworthy for the girls leading the field home, closely followed by Ioan Reading of Cerist Juniors and Tyrii Bell of Newmarket Joggers with Thomas Lawson and Seren Jones completing the top three.
The weather continued to remain changeable into the early afternoon and it was noticeable that the gusts of wind were becoming a little more regular which added an extra dimension to the racing on the tough 2km bike course.
T1 started with a bang with both Ioan Hedd Oldfield 17:25 of Ruthin TriStars and Eden Rae Davies 19:17 of Celtic Tri establishing themselves as the athletes to beat in this category. Harrison Coppen came in a close second behind Ioan in 17:48 with Olivia Tovey Cadence TriStars in 20:31 coming in second for the girls, with Samuel Hayes Taff Ely Tri only a further 10 seconds behind in the boys race in 17:58 and Holly Mayers of Cadence TriStars completing the medallists in a time of 21:39.
The T2 athletes flew out of the blocks and did not disappoint with some superb racing being had with Osian Perrin of Menai Track and Field 23:15 holding off Joseph James Reardon of Taf Ely Tri 23:58 and Ioan Evans 24:14. the girls race was equally exiting with Kate Pugh of OOTri leading home the field in a time of 24:45 with Ruthin TriStars Ella Haf Oldfield coming in, in a time of 26:56 with Shannon Rae Haird of INTRtri close behind in a time of 27:09.
The final race of the day was contested by the T3 athletes and like everyone else had some tough conditions to compete in. In the boys race last years winner Jacob Beetham retained his Ruthin title by coming home in a time of 35:28. Ben Lewis of Hughes Cycles was racing for the first time after illness forced him to withdraw in Llangefni showed he was back and meant business with an excellent second place aided by a fantastic ride of 17:22 in a time of 36:03 closely followed by only 2 seconds by the ever consistent Nathaniel Harries Celtic Tri in a time of 36:05. The girls race was dominated by Molly Shermer from Staffordshire who clocked an excellent time of 36:01 and Ellie McCormick of Celtic Tri 36:19 only 13 seconds behind with Llangefni winner Annabelle McQueen of TriStars Conwy completing the top three with a time of 37:22.
A fantastic day of racing in what were tough conditions on a tough course which was received well by everyone attending.
The RTS Race Team and Welsh Triathlon would like to thank all of the volunteers giving up their time to assist in making the day run smoothly, all the parents for their wonderful support not only of their own child but that of all the children who were competing and for setting a wonderful example of sportsmanship throughout, and finally we would like to thank all of the athletes who took part, we look forward to seeing you all in Buckley and Cosmeston in the coming weeks and back in Ruthin in 2015. Pictures from the event will be on the club website in the next few days.
